Interior

The 3500 interior was something of a breakthrough, featuring two genuine double cabins built into a hull that actually sailed well. Quite the accomplishment!

Forward, the v-berth has a large double berth with a plush mattress.  Several drawers, fiddled shelves and a large hanging locker to port keep your belongings stowed away and the cabin tidy. The hanging locker to starboard houses the AC unit. The bi-fold door and folding louvered pass-thru window can be opened to provide flow-thru ventilation and to open up the entire cabin space more. Additional ventilation is provided by an overhead hatch, two opening ports and a Hella fan. Four overhead and two brass reading lights provide lots of additional lighting.

The aft cabin has another double berth with a plush custom mattress configured in two pieces that make removing it for under bed access quite easy. A hanging locker with a fiddled shelf above it at the entry to the cabin and a fiddled shelf along the hull side keeps gear stowed. There’s plenty of ventilation, with two ports and a Hella fan to keep the air moving.

In the main cabin, the beamy hull provides a surprising amount of space for a 35' boat. Two straight settees to port and starboard flank a centerline drop leaf table.  The starboard settee will convert to an additional berth if needed. The cherry joinery is well crafted and feels elegant - not like many of the other production boats of this era that went to manufactured wood. The port settee has an aluminum water tank beneath the forward part and storage on the aft, with storage behind the seat backs as well. Above are a pair of louvered door lockers and a fiddled shelf. The starboard settee has the refrigeration unit beneath the “L” portion of the seat and storage the full length beneath it along the hull. There is storage behind this seat as well, a large open shelf space directly above and behind it and two louvered door lockers above (one being for bottle storage) and a fiddled shelf forward.

Chainplates are visible and accessible, which is a underrated feature in a boat.  There is excellent ventilation is provided by two Hood overhead deck hatches and 10 stainless steel Hood portlights. The settees have contoured cushions that are quite nice to sit on and the cabin sole is teak with inlaid holly and shines like new.

The single head to port has a molded liner for easy wipe down cleaning. A separate shower area has a Plexiglas door to keep the rest of the head dry and stores out of the way when not in use. Past that and to the left is a molded Corian countertop and sink, with a locker beneath the counter and a teak framed sliding mirrored door medicine cabinet above. There is a Jabsco Quiet Flush electric head with macerator with a 16 gal holding tank and a Y-valve for overboard discharge.

The nav station is tucked behind the galley and offers a good amount of space and a table that can hold an actual paper chart.

Galley

The galley is J-shaped and on starboard. The cherry fiddled Corian countertops have an integrally molded in sink located on centerline. There is a locker beneath the sink. Moving to the right of that is the icebox, which has top and front access and Frigoboat 12v. refrigeration. Double-door lockers are above the counter above the icebox. Next is the Force 10 stove, with a microwave in the space above that. To the right of the stove is countertop space, with a top loading trash bin below it, a locker below that and three drawers above for utensils. There are two ports and a dorade above the countertop, so you have great ventilation when cooking.

Deck and Hull

The Tartan 3500 has a redesigned coach roof for added interior space and headroom. And it's full of innovative ideas, like a transom featuring an electric swim platform for easy access to the dinghy or the water.

White gel coated hull, hand laminated with alternating layers of strand mat and unidirectional E-glass. It is partially balsa cored for stiffness. The gelcoat back-up layer is laminated using Vinylester resin for blister resistance. The deck is hand laminated, using a balsa cored unidirectional E-glass laminate and polyester resin, with a contrasting non-skid. All hardware installation points are solid glass backed with 1/4" aluminum plates. The hull to deck joint is chemically bonded and fastened w/ SS fasteners that are drilled and tapped into aluminum backing plates then molded into hull flange.

The lead beavertail keel is the shoal draft version and draws 4’10”. The balanced spade rudder is an elliptical foam cored blade with fiberglass skins and is built around a three inch stainless steel rudder shaft.
