About the Tartan Fantail
The hull form is a contemporary shape without extremes, designed to deliver predictable and rewarding performance. She has a fine entry forward with plenty of hull volume in the topsides to properly balance the full aft sections. Through her mid-body the sections are vee’d for a sea kindly motion. Running aft the sections are broad and flat for great stability and off the wind performance. The freeboard must be carefully balanced to provide adequate sitting headroom below, a dry ride on deck and exceptional good looks.
The fractional rig is large yet manageable, featuring a self-tacking jib for efficient and effortless upwind sailing. A sail area to displacement ratio of 26 guarantees rewarding light air performance. Balanced by 1200 lbs. of ballast in a very low center of gravity bulb design, the Fantail will also stand up to a breeze. Off-wind, extend the sprit and set the Code 0 sail for maximum performance without the need of a large crew. Efficient performance and ease of handling are the hallmarks of the Fantail rig.
The Fantail Weekender Edition features several upgraded features including:

  • Carbon pocket boom with integral mainsail cover and lazy jacks for convenient mainsail handling

Torqeedo engine
The Torqeedo Cruise 2.0 electric engine operates on two lithium ion batteries that run in parallel with each other, giving you extended range while underway. The charging system is currently set up for the battery charger to be used via a shorepower connection at the dock, however, a small solar panel can be added if you plan to keep the boat on a mooring or if shore power is not available.
The Torqeedo Cruise's on-board computer calculates the remaining range constantly, by linking the motor's consumption data with the charging level of the batteries, and the speed over the ground from the GPS. This allows you to read the remaining range in real time from the motor display or the smartphone app TorqTrac.

Battery life varies depending on speed and water conditions, but the following ranges can be expected:
  • 4-5 hours: 6 knots (about 3/4 throttle) with calm water with a clean bottom
  • 15-16 hours: 3 knots
As a local reference, the motor will easily get you from St Michaels back to Annapolis at about ¾ throttle. Since the batteries are Lithium Ion, they will draw down to 10% before the display gives an error warning like the low gas warning in your car. At that time, you will have about one hour to limp home at half speed or so.
