Overview

Are you tired of shifting through the sea of Euro-style production boats on the market today, searching for a quality built boat that is robust enough to safely handle off shore conditions yet still easy to single hand?  Perhaps you've stumbled upon a few that look interesting at first but on closer inspection you see that age has not been kind to her? Does this needle in a haystack you've been searching for actually exist?

Your search is over. Running on MT is a gorgeous Sabre 402 which has been meticulously cared for and continuously upgraded by her ORIGINAL owner. Her traditional interior, modern hull and quality construction puts her at the front of the pack for someone looking for a great couples cruiser in the 40' range. Read on for a full description of all the wonderful upgrades and care the owner has given Running on MT during his ownership.

The Sabre 402 was a huge success with sailors, winning Cruising World's "Mid-Sized Cruiser" and "Overall Boat of the Year" awards in 1997. Subsequently, Sabre Yachts built 112 Sabre 402's over eight years, of which Running on MT is hull #78.

Accommodations

MAIN SALON:

Entering from the companionway, the main salon is impressive.  The varnished cherry cabinetry, ash ceilings and teak and holly cabin sole are stunning, giving the feeling of warmth and luxury. Because Sabre utilized the wide 13'4" beam, the accommodations feel large and the headroom is great at 6'6". Comfortable settees are to port and starboard, with the port side convertible to a double berth. An elegant centerline table with folding leaves will comfortably seat six at meal time.  Aft and to starboard is the forward-facing nav station, which features a sophisticated electronics system. Aft of the nav station is the head with direct access to the aft cabin and features a separate shower area to keep the rest of the space dry when showering.

  • Original cherry interior has been maintained in near perfect condition
  • Ultra-suede salon cushions replaced in 2016
  • Teak and holly cabin sole was refinished in 2018 to its original shine
  • Port lights replaced in 2020
  • Air Conditioner: 16,000 BTU for main salon and aft cabin and a 7,000 BTU for the forward cabin. Compressor for the forward unit is located aft, reducing noise in the forward cabin.
  • 12V fans
  • Superior ventilation with (2) large and (6) small deck hatches plus (10) opening ports. In addition, two chrome dorades ensure additional circulation of the interior air
  • Flatscreen TV on bulkhead
  • Jabsco Quiet Flush Electric Head
  • Electroscan MSD (waste treatment system) installed 2018

CABIN AREAS:

In the forward cabin there is a large double berth (6'10" at center) surrounded by hanging lockers, storage lockers, and ample shelving; also in the forward cabin is a vanity with Corian counter, sink, and mirror for guests to freshen up in private. Additional storage is under the berth.

In the aft cabin is a large double berth (6'10")  with storage spaces and drawers underneath. The berth's occupants can recline with open spaces overhead - unlike the aft cabins of many boats of this type. Outboard of the berth is a long shelf with lockers, a set of drawers, and a large hanging locker. At the forward end of the cabin on centerline is a convenient magazine/book rack. There is also direct access to the head via the shower stall.

GALLEY:

The U-shaped galley features a large Corian countertop for preparing an elaborate dinner at anchor or a quick snack underway. The dual Sea Frost top and front loading refrigerator and additional freezer compartment are a necessity for stocking up on provisions for an extended cruise and run on both shore or engine power.  There is a double stainless sink with raw and filtered water spigots, three-burner Force 10 propane stove/oven and microwave to round out the space. A full compliment of galleyware conveys with the boat.

Deck, Hull and Cockpit

Created by Jim Taylor and the Sabre Design Team, the 402 seamlessly dovetails impressive speed and performance with all the elegance and craftsmanship of a proper yacht. Its a beautiful design that's fast enough to hold her own on the race course and comfortable enough for a couple to cruise. The wider beam is carried further aft than in her predecessors, allowing for a roomy cockpit and wide decks. Sabre spared no expense to make the 402 design the most comfortable, safe and easy to use boat in her class.

  • Hand laminated hull using a balsa core & fiberglass sandwich construction above the waterline for stiffness as well as additional thermal and sound insulation. Solid fiberglass below waterline. Balsa and fiberglass sandwich deck construction. Deck is chemically bonded to hull and thru bolted every 6".
  • Keel Type: Wing, Ballast: 8000 lb, Displacement: 19500 sq ft, Max Draft: 4.92 ft
  • All floor stingers, bulkheads, shelving and berth faces laminated to hull to provide integral structural strength.
  • Stainless steel chainplates, thru-bolted to chainplate bulkheads bonded to the hull and grounded to the keel. -Mounted well inboard for optimum sheeting angles.
  • Wide side decks make navigating fore and aft easy and safe.
  • The well balanced helm with large wheel allows for a quick and responsive boat.
  • Balanced rudder, molded fiberglass bonded to a carbon fiber rudder stock passing through a Tide's Marine top bearing and a lip seal bearing laminated to the hull. Carbon posts are less susceptible to damage than stainless steel posts.
  • Beautiful dark blue Awlgrip hull with red boot and cove stripes.
  • Minimal exterior brightwork for easy maintenance. The small amount of wood on the exterior has been recently varnished.
  • Folding cockpit table stows out of the way while not in use so crew can always find a place to brace their feet on the face of the seat on the low side.
  • There is a deep cockpit locker to starboard and another aft for storage.
  • Groco salt water washdown pump at bow added in 2017
  • Lewmar Windlass with remote controls, foot pedals, and switch at helm in 2017
  • New Lifelines in 2020
  • Hot & cold cockpit shower
  • Step transom with boarding ladder
  • Full Winter Cover (serviceable; needs restitching in a few areas)
Sails and Rigging

Sabre's experience in designing sailing yachts for sailors shows wherever you look on the 402. Everything is sized for ease of handling and is placed just where it should be. Control lines are brought aft to the cockpit for halyards, mainsheet, reefing, traveller control and outhaul lines. It features an Awlgrip finished, triple spreader rig with aft swept spreaders and a Navtec rod rigging for optimum sheeting angles and less pitching in a sea way.
